On looking through some old Wembley ware pictures I came across this one which may shed a bit more light on the "what are the numbers for?" that are on the base of some items. Long held belief was that it was the painters reference, used instead of their name, also in later years it has been indicated that the numbers were used by the laboratory when testing new colours and glazes. This picture I think adds weight to the laboratory theory but by no means proves it.
