Hi Michael, very nice ashtray and as you say I would also believe it to be hand painted but Sherratts work is usually signed. If we look at it logically with all the works attributed to him, he would have been a very busy man painting for many hours over a long period of years. A lady has just stated on Facebook that if you can't see the signature by the naked eye or magnifying glass then in her opinion it isn't there and I tend to agree with her. Having said that it is also everyone's right to have their own opinions and if it's your's that Sherratt painted this (and he may well have) then you have a nice piece to add to your collection, Sherratt painted or not.
Thank you for sharing this with us Michael, we would love to share any other pieces that you may find in the future or indeed any of your collection.

Hi Michael. A plate with a very similar painting on it recently sold for $516 on eBay, as I guess you have already seen. I would say that the Artist was the same one as on your ashtray. Artists have a very distinctive style and that is how people recognise their work, so that is why I believe they were painted by Norm Sherratt. I have two fan vases nearly identical and one is signed Norm and the other is not but I do believe he painted it. In Paul Bisby's book they say attributed to Norm Sherratt. He only worked at the Wembley Ware factory for 4 years and in John Thomson's book he says that nearly all the Australian bush scenes were painted by Norm Sherratt and that some were signed below the scene - meaning he did not sign them all. I believe you have one of his. Enjoy. Regards Carole.
